Lunchtime Recital: Helen Charlston with Toby Carr

  • Wednesday 14th November 2018

  • The Hospital Church of St Bartholomew the Less

On Wednesday 14th November 2018, mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston (2018 CMF Artist), with lutenist Toby Carr, gave the third recital in our 2018-19 Lunchtime Recital Series at St Bart’s the Less.

Hailed as a “rather special mezzo” (MusicWeb International), Helen Charlston’s warm and distinctive tone has cemented her as a key performer in the next generation of British singers. Her recital, titled ‘Lettera Amorosa’, paired the solo vocal works (a voce sola) of two great Italian composers: Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) and Barbara Strozzi (1619-77). The programme included Monteverdi’s Lettera Amorosa (published 1619) and his Lamento d’Arianna, the only surviving fragment of his 1608 opera, L’Arianna. For full details, please download the programme below.

Wonderful, passionate songs by Monteverdi and Strozzi. Inspiring to hear!
