CMF Summer Residency at The Wallace Collection 1-5 August 2022

Join us for a week of fabulous music in a picture-perfect setting as we embark on the annual City Music Foundation Summer Residency at The Wallace Collection, running Monday 1st August until Friday 5th, everyday at 13:00.

Over five days, City Music Foundation Artists will perform in the Great Gallery. They will present curiously curated programmes that respond to The Wallace Collection’s vast array of artworks, which ranges from oil paintings from Titian, Rubens and Velasquez, to decorative arts and even suits of armour!

The week is kicked off by Connaught Brass on August 1, who have designed their programme around the Inspiring Walt Disney exhibition. With music ranging from Kurt Weill to Florence Price, this concert explores two golden ages: 18th-century France and 20th-century America, ending with a fun ‘Disney-esque’ cartoon finale.

Next up on August 2 are early-music experts Ensemble Hesperi, who are joined by tenor Richard Robbins in an exploration of the Sounds of Baroque Venice. Dip your toes into Venetian waters, with this concert featuring vocal and instrumental works by Vivaldi, Handel, and Monteverdi.

On August 3, pianist Antoine Préat transforms the Great Gallery into a townhouse salon. Taking inspiration from architecture and paintings of The Wallace Collection, Antoine aims to recreate the intimate atmosphere that inspired three solo works from Rameau, Schubert, and Schumann.

We travel back in time on August 4 with cellist Joy Lisney and pianist Victor Lim who take fresh inspiration from the Walt Disney collection. Familiar, balletic works by Debussy and Ravel are contrasted with two 20th century American masterpieces from Crumb and Barber.

Rounding off the week on August 5 in festive style, we welcome soprano Harriet Burns and pianist Ian Tindale for a whistle-stop round-up of the entire Collection. Interspersed with poetry, Harriet’s guided tour explores classicism, Venice, royalty, and even promiscuity. Featuring the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, and Judith Weir.

So do join us for free throughout the week for what promises to be a fantastic series. All performances begin at 13:00 — for more information visit: https://www.wallacecollection.org/whats-on/
