Event Details

City Music Foundation is partnering with Barbican and Culture Mile for Sound Unbound, a free music festival taking place in the City of London Saturday 18 – Sunday 19 May 2019. This weekend-long classical music festival will explore unexpected spaces across Culture Mile, which stretches from Farringdon to Moorgate in the north-west of the Square Mile, celebrating fantastic music alongside the history and heritage of the area.

Lotte Betts-Dean (mezzo-soprano) and Andrey Lebedev (guitar) present ‘Brasiliana’ at Piano Smithfield.

About the programme: Celebrating the flair of Brazilian music, mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean and guitarist Andrey Lebedev present a selection of well-known Bossa Nova tunes, including The Girl from Ipanema. The Bossa Nova style, or ‘new trend’, was a popular music tradition that developed in Brazil in the late 1950s, spearheaded by composer and performer, Antônio Carlos Jobim. Alongside more music by Jobim, their programme also includes Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No.5, perhaps Brazil’s most famous classical melody and, looking to the future, a new take on Bossa Nova by contemporary Brazilian-American multi-instrumentalist and composer, Clarice Assad.
