Y-Squared

Cello and Piano

Y-Squared has been the winning formula for both Yelian He and Yasmin Rowe since 2008. The name represents not only dedication towards performing the greatest repertoire both old and new, but also embodies a discipline to explore the depth of communication between 2 artists on stage.

Some of their recent performances have been in prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall and Bridgewater Concert Hall and they have performed together at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Brighton Festival, Adelaide International Cello Festival and Woodend Winter Arts Festival. In November this year they will be performing a selection of trios by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Haydn with violinist Wilma Smith (ex-concertmaster of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) around Melbourne. Y-Squared’s first music videos will also be releasing later in 2016 – full details will be available from the City Music Foundation and the Y-Squared websites.

An international prize winner, Y-Squared gave the 1st prize winning performance in the 2009 Royal Over-Seas League String Competition in London and was the Grand prize and Audience prize winner of the 2014 Australian Cello Awards competition in Sydney. Y-Squared is extremely grateful to have been supported by the Tunnell Trust, Kirckman Concert Society, Manchester Mid-Day Society, Making Music and City Music Foundation awards.

Y-Squared would like to thank the numerous supporters for their time and generous assistance over the years, including the societies and foundations listed above.

Mendelssohn's D Major [Cello] Sonata was totally convincing, the Adagio in particular being beautifully lyrical. A light and well-defined opening characterised the scherzo, and the finale was both exciting and technically flawless.
